Ph.D. Patrick Townsend, research professor at the School of Maritime Engineering and Marine Sciences (FIMCM) of ESPOL, participated as an invited speaker at The 15th International Conference on Key Engineering Materials (ICKEM 2025), held in Marinha, Portugal.
His research, entitled “Improvement of the Mechanical Properties of GFRP Laminates Used in the Construction of Ship Hulls by Implementing Auxetic Sheet Cores”, demonstrates how auxetic cores can improve the strength of ship hulls made of composite materials, reducing impact damage and extending their service life.
This work, developed in collaboration with the Materials Research Center of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and local shipyards, positions FIMCM-ESPOL as a reference in innovation in advanced materials for the shipbuilding industry.
