The lake of the School of Maritime Engineering and Marine Sciences (FIMCM) of ESPOL is an emblematic space that combines science, nature and sustainability. It was created in 1991 for academic and recreational purposes, and since then has served as a natural laboratory for the development of research, field practices and educational activities related to the study of aquatic ecosystems.
With an area of 6.55 hectares, a depth of approximately 13 meters and average temperatures between 21°C and 23°C, this body of water is home to a remarkable biological diversity. Species such as tilapia, old blue and freshwater lobsters have found here a suitable habitat for their development, making the lake a haven for aquatic life.
In addition, its natural trails allow activities such as trekking and bird watching, being frequented by migratory species and wildlife of the region. This interaction between the natural environment and the university community strengthens FIMCM's commitment to environmental conservation and the training of professionals with an integral vision of natural resources.
The FIMCM lake not only represents an invaluable educational resource, but also a symbol of the synergy between scientific knowledge, respect for biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
